Getting tested

Your GP should be happy to perform tests to see if you are suffering from POF. Unfortunately it isn't always this straight forward and GPs often seem to test everything else before they consider POF. So you may need to be pushy!
The tests that you absolutely need are blood tests to measure follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Estrodiol. Your ovaries use FSH to make estrogen. FSH levels rise when the ovaries stop making estrogen. When FSH levels are higher than normal, you've reached menopause. However, your estrogen levels vary daily, so you may need this test more than once to know for sure. Estradiol levels fall when the ovaries fail. Levels lower than normal are a sign of menopause. LH is a hormone that triggers ovulation. If you test above normal levels, you've probably gone through menopause.
If these test results suggest Premature Ovarian Failure it is worth asking to be referred to a Specialist. They will probably perform these tests again along with others. They should also refer you for a bone scan to check your bone density has not fallen and depending on your symptoms possibly start you on HRT.
